After years of research, writing, rewriting, and refining, I am nearing publication of my debut historical novel, For Love and Empire.

Set in 1911 Madras at the height of the British Raj, the story follows Sarah Andrews, a young widow determined to become a physician in a world that insists she should not. What begins as a medical journey quickly becomes something far more dangerous, entangling her in political unrest, moral compromise, and a love that tests everything she believes about loyalty and identity.

This book explores:

  • The role of women in early 20th-century medicine

  • The moral cost of empire

  • The bonds of family and friendship forged in crisis

  • And the tension between love and duty

Writing this novel has required deep research into colonial India, military medicine, early surgical practices, and the cultural complexity of the Raj. But more than that, it has required courage. The courage to ask hard questions about history and about ourselves.

The Long Road to Here

There were moments when I wondered if I could finish it.

There were drafts that did not work. Scenes that had to be torn apart and rebuilt. Characters who demanded more complexity than I initially imagined. But each revision strengthened the story.

Much like medicine, writing requires both precision and intuition.

As a clinician, I have spent decades listening to patients, their fears, their resilience and their unspoken truths. Those skills followed me onto the page. The discipline of medicine and the art of storytelling are not so different; both require empathy, observation, and an unrelenting pursuit of truth.

Over time, what began as a private creative project became something larger. It became a calling.

What Comes Next

The manuscript is in its final stages of refinement. Cover design is almost complete. Publication plans are actively underway.

There is still work to be done, but we are close.

In the coming weeks, I will be sharing:

  • Behind-the-scenes glimpses into the research

  • Character introductions

  • Historical notes that shaped the story

  • And publication updates

If you have followed my professional journey in medicine, this next chapter may surprise you. But in many ways, it feels inevitable. Storytelling has always been there — waiting.
